I may have made a mistake

 ...in signing up for three different Mo Dao Zu Shi secret santas.

My thought process was essentially "I'm in single-fandom mode and I want to focus on oneshots anyway, so this is perfect" but I forgot how...uninterested I am in what, it turns out, people are most likely to prompt. It's a secret santa, you get to request fics tailored to your interests! Do you really want to ask for the same thing that exists on ao3 a hundred times over? But that's probably not the main issue, honestly, it's really that kids are giving me very little time to write the past few weeks and so my plotbunny brain is quickly outpacing my writing brain. I want to be finished writing the stuff I wanted to write a month ago, so I can write the things I want to write now.

If I end up posting a fic entirely about Wen Ning, Wen Qing, Granny, and Wei Wuxian trying to get A-Yuan to fall asleep, don't be surprised.

Do you really want to ask for the same thing that exists on ao3 a hundred times over?
And this is why I don't sign up for secret santas that just draw participants' names out of a hat! (More competent exchanges will have participants state the characters/ships/whatever they wish to receive, and the characters/ships/whatever they're willing to create stuff for, and then matching based on that, so it's possible to make/receive stuff that isn't The Most Popular Thing Ever.) As for the recip side, well, I suppose the reason it exists on AO3 a hundred times over is that people want to read it a thousand times over.

Thing is, they all did ask for preferences--but it seems like they only took those into account on the receiving side, not the creating side. Sigh. But I suppose I can sympathize--I ran a fandom secret santa for a couple of years and did my best to match both ways, and it wasn't easy.

Aw. People should be free to ask for what they want – and be matched with someone who is capable of giving them that. At least in the ballpark range. I ran what could technically be called a secret santa but for the date range in coronationceremony, and compared to that, all these secret santas/single-fandom exchanges are bafflingly ... broad on their matching criteria.
