I finished and sent off the book I made for the Renegade Bindery Exchange! The fic is Thirty-three Lashes by Wingless, as requested by Jenny Linsky. It's a modern reincarnation AU ... sort of? Basically it's immortal LWJ, and WWX who comes back in MXY's body as he does in canon, except that rather than thirteen years later, it's a couple thousand.

The fic isn't a pure horror fic but it has a lot of horror elements and I decided to lean into those in the binding, using rough layered paper cutouts to reflect the scars of LWJ's curse. It's a three piece bradel binding with a dark red leather spine (I learned that if I tape it down to paper, I can run thin leather through my printer! neat!) The endpapers are suminagashi marbling on the same red paper as the innermost layer of the cover.

This one took a while to make, especially since all my kids got colds in the middle of the project and I lost my evening worktime for a week, but I'm really happy with how it came out!

Book opened flat, showing the front and back cover, which feature black paper cut to show layers of red paper underneath.

The inside front cover of the book, showing the endpaper, red paper with a swirled black marbled design.

Ooh, wow! That is amazing and yes, somewhat sinister. I love that blood-spill of an end paper :) And the three layers work really well to give the lash marks depth, like it's really cutting in to flesh. Very dramatic and gory :)

I really loved that fic, I read it sometime last year? I think? I’m not into horror but I could deal well with those elements present in the fic. The dilapidated house really was very creepy!

I saw that binding on tumblr, of course, but as usual didn’t make the connection that it’s you because it’s under the bindery name and I can't ever remember who is who. XD

I really love the design of it, very visceral and fitting! The endpaper is really cool! The whole book looks awesome! ♥

I wanted to try bradle binding this year, perhaps. I like the look of it. But I’ll have to see whether the German channel I’ve used so far for getting me started also has an instruction video for this type of binding. I find it easier to listen to the instructions in German and Heidi's videos have been easy to follow so far. I do like listening to/watching DAS_bookbinding, and I know he has several videos for this kind of binding, but it’s a bit exhausting for me to listen to everything in English while also trying to follow along. XD

this is so evocative that I find it a bit unsettling. Like, I realize scars are raised and not recessed, but this really evokes scars with its texture. It's so effective.
